ratchet acOdkryte ponad 100 lat temu ruchy Browna dały początek dzisiejszym badaniom nad dynamiką cząstek w asymetrycznych potencjałach, zwanymi poprzez analogię Brownowskimi motorami. Stochastyczne równania różniczkowe opisujące ewolucję czasową takich obiektów pozwalają przewidywać zachowania tak różnych układów fizycznych jak motory molekularne, biologiczne, zimne ad-atomy czy złącza Josephsona. Pomimo 20 lat badań układy te wciąż potrafią zaskakiwać naukowców, pozwalając odkrywać nowe, nieznane własności.

 

Brownowskie motory to układy dynamiczne będące w stanie zamieniać równowagowy szum termiczny na użyteczną pracę. Owa praca może być rozumiana jako przetransportowanie białka wewnątrz komórki, wytworzenie różnicy potencjału złącza czy przejście pomiędzy dwoma termodynamicznie stabilnymi stanami cząsteczki. Aby wykorzystać wydawałoby się bezużyteczną równowagową energię pochodzącą od termicznego szumu należy dodatkowo złamać symetrię ukrytą w układzie. Wiąże się to z zasadą Curie. Możemy np: dodatkowo napędzać badany układ asymetrycznym sygnałem (deterministycznym bądź losowym), możemy postarać się wygenerować asymetryczny potencjał efektywnie odczuwany przez cząsteczkę bądź też złamać symetrię szumu termicznego. Układy o złamanej symetrii znane są w literaturze jako układami zębatkowo - zapadkowymi lub krótko raczetami (z ang. ratchet). 

 

W Zakładzie Fizyki Teoretycznej zajmujemy się teoretycznym opisem transportu w tak zdefiniowanych układach. Bazując na równaniach Langevina bądź też odpowiadających im równaniach Fokkera-Plancka badamy wpływ parametrów układu na własności transportowe, takie jak wartość oczekiwana prędkości, jej odchylenie standardowe, sprawność silnika czy efektywna dyfuzja opisująca jakość transportu. Badamy również warunki w jakich w układzie występuje transport anomalny wykazujący ujemną mobilność (przewodność), warunki dla optymalnego transportu, wpływ efektów inercyjnych, tarcia, temperatury otoczenia, korelacji szumu czy efektów kwantowych.
